HistologiX is also licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) to source and store human tissue and has ethical approval to undertake antibody screening in human tissues.

HistologiX was formed in 2005 as an independent GCP and GLP accredited contract research laboratory and has retained this status by inspection from the MHRA. We provide Histology, Immunohistochemistry and Digital Pathology services to the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries. With our laboratories based in the UK, our customer base is global.
Our Directors, Laboratory Managers, Study Directors and Research Scientists have in excess of 120 years of experience within this niche area. Barbara McManus BSc
Barbara began her scientific career within academic research institutes following her graduation from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, before moving into the contract testing industry. Barbara holds more than twenty years of invaluable client management experience within the Life Sciences Sector and has worked for both large multinationals and small business start-ups such as BioOutsource and MD Biosciences. Barbara aims to grow the HistologiX business by focussing on the client needs and leading, mentoring, and empowering people to develop high performing teams.
Susan Smith BSc
Histology Lab Manager & Study Director
Susan is the Histology Lab Manager at HistologiX and is responsible for the management and coordination of the Histology studies. She has expert knowledge of frozen sectioning, tissue processing/embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, IHC, IF and ISH.
Having begun her scientific career within the Pharmaceutical environment of the Histology Department at Boots Pharmaceuticals, Susan subsequently joined Astra as a Histology Technician where she performed histology techniques, special staining and IHC techniques. This later became AstraZeneca. Susan had a brief career change and worked as a Microbiologist for a Manufacturing Company for several years before returning to the Pharmaceutical Industry. Throughout her career Susan has been Health and Safety Representative for the departments that she has worked in and has gained IOSH accreditation. At HistologiX, Susan prepares COSHH & Risk Assessments, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
Elaine Foster BSc
IHC Lab Manager & Study Director
Elaine is the IHC Manager at HistologiX and is responsible for the management and coordination of the IHC studies. Elaine began her scientific career in the Histopathology department of Queen’s Medical Centre sectioning breast and colon cancer tissues and performing IHC & radioactive-ISH assays. Elaine moved to a research group within the University of Leicester whose focus was IgA nephropathy. During that time she gained experience in a wide range of techniques, and was responsible for the management of expenditure for the grant accounts and Health and Safety. At Medical Solutions plc (Source BioScience), Elaine took a change of direction moving working as part of the drug discovery team where she helped set up GLP procedures within the laboratory. In 2006 she joined HistologiX, initially as a member of the histology and IHC teams and then progressing to IHC lab Manager. With her extensive practical experience of IHC techniques, she is well placed to support clients from project proposal to completion of study report.
James Clay BSc
Image Analysis Manager
James began his scientific career as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in diagnostic histopathology at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan, specialising in Immunohistochemistry and routine histopathology.
In 2008, James took a change of direction and transitioned his career over to contract research, joining HistologiX Ltd as a research scientist where he applied his extensive knowledge and experience with IHC assay optimisation to support our client’s studies. Taking lead roles in the design, conduct and reporting of regulatory (GLP) Tissue Cross Reactivity studies with novel therapeutic antibodies, along with routine single and dual-plex IHC assays.
James went on to develop HistologiX Ltd.’s digital pathology capabilities, integrating whole slide imaging with the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer, followed by development of quantitative image analysis services using Indica Labs HALO®. These services revolutionised the way in which we work with histological and immunohistochemical preparations, maximising the value of quantitative data which can be extracted from a sample.
As Image Analysis Manager, with his extensive knowledge of histological, immunohistochemical, digital pathology and quantitative image analysis techniques, James is ideally placed to support our client’s projects throughout the study lifecycle.
Sunita Mistry MRes
Business Development Manager
Sunita joined HistologiX in November 2015 as the Business Development Manager. With her sales and scientific background, she is well placed to devise project proposals through scientific discussion, and strengthen the relationship with clients.
Within the NHS, Sunita qualified as a Biomedical Scientist in Histology and worked in various histopathology laboratories. Following this, Sunita completed a Masters in Research and then gained experience in Molecular Pathology (Oncology) within Large Pharma. As a Research Scientist, she worked on IHC, FISH, method development, digital image analysis and study reporting within the preclinical and clinical drug development setting. Sunita worked in commercial and training roles for one of largest global providers of digital pathology, before joining HistologiX.
